Northwestern Post Game

Thoughts on Game:
Penn State was recovering from a hangover after a big win in Michigan. The team came out flat in the first half. The offense was having trouble getting in the first quarter aside from our first drive and our lone touchdown drive of the first half. Northwestern threw the kitchen sink at us and still only managed a three point lead at halftime. However Penn State caught a break when Mike Kafka went down with an injury. Kafka was playing lights out making plays with his arm and on the ground. Things could have gotten interesting had he been in the whole game. Clark had another big day. Royster also had a good day on the ground. The line has really responded nicely since the Iowa game. They have improved each week and this week was no different. The defense played on their heels a bit and finally beared down and started showing how good they really can be at times. They will need to bring it from the first snap if we plan on winning next week. All around great second half team performance. Also, was great to see Beachum get a few carries and have showing his physical running style. This guy needs to see more touches. It was also nice to see Justin Brown and Curtis Drake each haul in a nice catch both in critical point of the game. Overall great effort in the second half to get the 34-13 victory.

Penn State Michigan Recap

Penn State fans across the country can sleep easy tonight. Despite all the struggles with Michigan in Ann Arbor, the 2009 Nittany Lions weren't phased and played there best game of football all season.
Out of the gate things looked shaky when Michigan put together an impressive 11 play 70 yard opening drive capped off by a 1 yard TD run of Brandon Minor. Penn State quickly responded with a 63 yard drive of their own ending with 10 yard connection from Clark to Graham Zug for a 10 yard touchdown pass. Up 10-7 Penn State capitalized off of a bad snap resulting in a Michigan safety. 13 seconds later Clark would hit Andrew Quarless deep for a 60 yard touchdown pass and making Michigan pay for a very costly mistake. With 9 seconds left Michigan kicked a field goal to make it 19-10. The defense holding Michigan to a field goal was the turning point in this game. Keeping them out of the endzone gave us the momentum going into half with the ball back and the Lions refused to let up. Just 2:12 into the second half, Penn State marched 43 yards for a touchdown. Clark would hit Zug for the 2nd time in the endzone for 11 yards. The Lions failed to convert there two point conversion making it 25-10. On the ensuing Michigan drive Bani Gbdayu forced a fumble from Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, and Josh Hull was able to recover on the loose ball setting up Penn State with the ball on the Michigan 22. 2 plays later Clark would find Zug yet again for the 3rd and final time on the day. Penn State would then go ahead 32-10. With a large lead, and seemingly everything going the Lions way, Brandon Graham blocked a punt deep into Penn State territory. Michigan came up with the big play to get themselves back into the game, only to squander yet another big oppurtunity. This can be credited to another big defensive play made by the Lions. Forcing another fumble, Navorro Bowman was able to come up with the ball and then the Lions were able to put things on cruise control. Wagner would net his second field goal of the day to make it 35-10 and be the only scoring of the 4th quarter. The Lions defensively would force 4 turnovers. Two of them which were interceptions by Navorro Bowman and Drew Astorino. This win marks Penn State's first victory in Ann Arbor since 1996. All Lions fans can truly breathe a sigh of relief and be proud of the way our team played today.

My Game Ball goes to:
Andrew Quarless
2 Rec, 91 yards, 1 TD
Not only did Quarless have a big touchdown grab to get the Lions out to a big lead, but Quarless had an excellent game blocking too. The guy really stepped it up today and was huge in the success of our offense. Congrats to you Andrew on a big day and having a nice rebound your senior year after having a disappointing season both on and off the field last year.

Final Analysis:
Penn State played their best football game of the season, and the defense really passed the test against a very good Michigan offense. This was the 2nd biggest test of the year and the Lions were up to the challenge by winning in dominating fashion. The offensive line has steadily improved since the Iowa game, and Clark has less pressure on himself to step up and make all the plays himself now that the running game has picked up, and the recieving corp of Zug, Powell, and Moye have begun to come into their own. Andrew Quarless really gives this offense another dimension with his blocking and ability to make some big time catches. His performance today was impressive to say the least and will need to continue to make plays for this team to win out. Navorro Bowman was impressive as always with an interception and a fumble recovery, as well as making tons of plays against the run. Defensive line was very dominant and wore down the Michigan offensive line. Secondary played decent but a lot of their success can be credited to a vicious pass rush from our defensive line. Overall this was the best football we've seen out of this team so far, and damn does it feel good going in and laying a nice beat down on the Wolverines in Ann Arbor. The streak is at 2! Lets keep it going next year! Lets GO STATE!

Penn State Michigan

I promised a preview for the Penn State Michigan game. Due to a busy Friday I was unable to get a chance to make that preview. I decided to just give a quick little run down of the game and my prediction for this Saturday.

Game Notes:
Penn State @ Michigan Kickoff 3:30 PM on ABC
Penn State (6-1) Michigan (5-2)
Tate Forcier is fully recovered from a concussion he recieved against Iowa.
Michigan is a 4 point underdog
Michigan ranks 9th overall in scoring offense, however Penn State has not faced a team all season that was ranked above 75th in total offense.
Penn State is looking for there 2nd straight win over Michigan.
Penn State's sixth ranked run defense will be challenged by a potent Michigan running attack that ranks eight in the nation.
Stephfon Green is questionable with an ankle injury.

Other Notes:
Penn State's last win in Ann Arbor was 29-17 victory in 1996
Michigan has won 8 of their last 9 against Penn State
Penn State lost there last meeting in Ann Arbor 14-9

My prediction:
This game has me very nervous for many reasons. Any time Penn State plays Michigan you know its going to be a battle. Michigan has been in our heads for a while, and last years win I think helped shake that which is why I'm confident that our team will play well and come out of Ann Arbor with a win. With Green questionable, the work load will be on Royster. He will step up big time and help open up our passing game with a big day on the ground. Also look for Quarless to have a big day as well. Michigan will throw everything they have at us, but Clark will lead the Lions down the field in a clutch drive to win the game, proving he can be the guy to win the game when it's on the line.
